Now, MEET TODAY’S GUEST:
Allen McMichael’s professional career started in a Westinghouse warehouse in the 1950s. Not long after, he began selling insurance on the side. In 1961, he became a full time representative for Metropolitan Life and eventually was promoted to management for 13 years. In 1981 Allen went into business for himself as an insurance broker; so, he’s been selling insurance all his life, and still does to this day into his 80s.
But when the Affordable Care Act became law, of course the insurance industry changed dramatically, and Allen lost a good deal of business in all the shifting and changes that occurred, including one company that sold to a larger corporation, which lost him $30,000 per year. That’s not something he could make back overnight selling insurance. In looking for avenues to pick up the slack, Allen discovered Legal Shield, which worked well for him as a gap-filler because he could easily add it as an employer benefit. Today he also sells ACN cellular phone and identity theft services, also to help businesses. But today we’ll be talking about the kind of work Allen does that he says helps him give back.
Allen McMichael founded Fostering Hope Tennessee, Inc. in 2013 as a Christian-based, family-centered organization with its foundation rooted in Jeremiah 29:11. Fostering Hope Tennessee advocates for the needs of children in foster care, raises awareness through connections with churches and through local community outreach, and provides suitcases, backpacks, and personal care and hygiene items to foster children in the Child Welfare System. One of the organization’s goals is to raise awareness to the fact that there are more than 9,000 children in state’s custody in Tennessee. Allen is the proud father of three adult children, and grandfather of 12. He and his wife, Sylvia, have been together since August 22, 1958, and make their home in Knoxville, Tennessee.
