Now, meet TODAY’S guest:
I think it’s safe to assume when Dr. Shawn Comerford was growing up and later going through his training to become a physician he never imagined one day he and his wife would be the proud owners of a Hawaiian-style poke’ (pronounced sort of like the kids dance hokey “pokey” and “okay” combined) restaurant… but that’s just what they are doing now!
With their grand opening in Knoxville’s Bearden / Sequoya Hills area earlier this month, Pokeworks is listed as a “Hot and New” spot on Yelp with all 5-star reviews. I’d say it’s going well.
Pokeworks is a national restaurant franchise chain that was founded in 2015. Their founder was inspired by sustainable, seasonal, and natural ingredients. From their website, “Pokéworks is committed to bringing you superior seafood. We view responsibly-sourced seafood as more than just a trend. We believe in the importance of meeting today’s needs while preserving our oceans so that future generations will never have to fish in troubled waters.”
But I have to say I was dubious about a raw seafood fast-food-style restaurant when I first heard about it. But we went, a I was blown away at the freshness and delicious food.
Today I’ll be talking to Shawn all about why he and his wife April decided they wanted to go into business together, why they wanted to open a restaurant, why they chose a franchise – and why something so unusual (to me, anyway!) like poke. I really am curious!
And if you happen to be in the Knoxville area or driving through (they’re not far off the Papermill Exit of Interstate 40 / 75), check out Pokeworks at 4447 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919. You’ll thank me later!
